Hero Skill Info Template(s)[edit]

--Ice Phoenix 22:07, 10 November 2009 (UTC): Having some issues with an ultimate's effects, namely Arachna's ult. It has to do with the Skillinfo template and I'll take care of it, but I've got work in an hour, so off I go.

--Workdawg 01:12, 11 November 2009 (UTC) - I noticed that on Scout's page as well... the applied effects thing breaks for ults only having 3 levels I think.
--Ice Phoenix 04:33, 11 November 2009 (UTC): Phew, finally got it taken care of.

--Ice Phoenix 18:06, 10 November 2009 (UTC): 5 pages in to the new skill template roll-out and it looks like it's taking me about 20 minutes per hero, much longer than I anticipated. Should we leave the hero pages as-is until all skill pages are complete, or continue to update hero pages as each group of skills is finished?

--Workdawg 18:13, 10 November 2009 (UTC) - Whatever way you think would be easiest. One of the other admins, who has since stopped coming around used AutoWikiBrowser to edit many pages quickly. I've never tried it, but it could reduce some of the work for you. You could just create all the skill pages, then use the browser to clean up the hero pages and drop the DPL statement in (i think).

--Ice Phoenix 10:02, 8 November 2009 (UTC): Okay, I think I'm done with my hero skill template:

Discussion is over at the Main Page discussion.

--Ice Phoenix 08:22, 7 November 2009 (UTC): Okay, so I'm almost done with my first test case at User:Ice_Phoenix/Sandbox/Night_Hound_candidate1. I still have some cleanup to do regarding table cell widths and maybe how it flows around the Herobox template, but it's close to what it's going to look like. After that I'll work on some other styles. Feedback appreciated!

--Ice Phoenix 09:00, 7 November 2009 (UTC): Done with User:Ice_Phoenix/Sandbox/Night_Hound_candidate1. Will add some more candidates with different color schemes and layouts tomorrow.
--Workdawg 14:18, 7 November 2009 (UTC) - I'm not really a big fan of using the skill template directly on the hero page. It makes it seem really cluttered IMO and you're duplicating a lot of information. (Effects of each level of the skill when they don't change, etc). I think it's fine for an individual skill page, but maybe we can create a summary table for the hero pages. Similar to what we've got now, only a bit cleaner, etc.
--Ice Phoenix 17:28, 7 November 2009 (UTC): Hmm...when given the choice I'd much rather see the skill section of playdota.com Night Stalker than HoN Night Hound. Yes, there's repeat information, but there's so much more information than what's available on the HoN page. And the entire skills page on heroesofnewerth.com comes out to 1285px height, versus the 1600px height of playdota.com, a difference of only about 20%.
Right now our skill tables are pretty much maxed as far as the amount of information that can fit in them. I'd rather have a longer hero skills section and be able to see detailed information about each skill right next to the corresponding skill, instead of having a skill table for each skill at the top of the article, skill effects for each skill in the middle of the article, and notes for each skill at the bottom of the article.
My last argument against the current skill summary table is that I think the differences between levels can get confusing, especially when Staff of the Master upgrades are worked in. So while a small, concise table may be the deciding factor for some, I would rather have all the information I need in a clear presentation. If nothing else, a link to an "Advanced Skill View" page near the skill summary table?
Now I will definitely agree with you that it "feels" cluttered. I'm still working on how I can clean it up. Step one would be to remove the borders and colors, but I'll see where it goes from there.
--Workdawg 18:02, 7 November 2009 (UTC) - Maybe later I'll throw together a sample summary table. I agree that having it all there is nice, but it's kind of a pain to have to scroll up or down to read all the skills. The only thing that I really think should be listed for each level of the skill is the effects. Maybe combine the range, cost, CD, etc into the HON style (120/140/160/180) and then keep the description the way you've got it.
Ugh, I hate dealing with damn tables in the wiki editor... anyways. I whipped up a quick demo as a sort of hybrid as I mentioned above... what do you think? LINKY ... Oh yeah, only smoke bomb is using the template I hacked together. The rest of the skills are still pointing to your first template.
--Ice Phoenix 19:05, 7 November 2009 (UTC): See I just don't mind having the repeat information. Your change looks good, but the (xx/xx/xx/xx) is one of the main things I wanted to get away from, and it doesn't really save much horizontal space on the page. Here I'm trying it out more in wiki-style formatting. It's still got some formatting tweaks to go, but do you like that kind of layout any better clutter-wise or in general?

--Workdawg 14:57, 10 November 2009 (UTC) - Once you get the template setup and moved out of your sandbox, I'll help convert all the heroes and skills over to it. Just let me know once you've got it ready to go.

--Ice Phoenix 15:00, 10 November 2009 (UTC): Give me just a couple more minutes here.

--Workdawg 15:04, 10 November 2009 (UTC) -Well, I'm at work all day, but I might find some time, otherwise it'll probably be tonight.

Feedback/Comments/Suggestions[edit]

It would be nice to have a item build template of sorts, maybe something similar to PVXwiki builds for GW. --Destriot 12:17, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
